Introducing an Eastern Classic
In Tang era Central Asia, the Buddhist monk Sanzang is sent to fetch some holy scriptures from western regions. To his protection he is accompanied by a group of demon warriors who have been punished by the heavenly court and now get the chance to redeem themselves. Among these are Sun Wukong, the famous Monkey King, Zhu Bajie the gluttonous Pig Demon and Sha Wujing the gentle Ogre. On their journey of 14 years they travel across dangerous mountain and mystical kingdoms, where they battle demons, witches and wild animals. And when there’s nothing else to do there’s plenty of opportunity to quarrel among themselves.

The Buddhist monk was sent by the royal court to travel to India to fetch some holy scriptures. For his safety he is given a team of demon soldiers, that should defend him on the way. While all the others are immortals he is a mere human, with no magic tricks up his sleeve. His attitude is non violent, and his body and soul are so pure, that monsters and demons often try to steal and to eat him. As a return for the many times his companions must save him, he teaches them the right way and eventually releases them all from their punishments. Sanzang is based on a real monk, who lived in the Tang era.
